Why Is My Water Heater Leaking And How Do I Fix It?

If you’ve noticed your water heater leaking, chances are you’re scrambling to find the best solution – and fast! Leaving leaks unaddressed for too long can cause water damage and high water bills. Water heaters can leak for a number of reasons. We cover what those reasons are, and how to fix them.

1. Old Tank

Your water heater may be leaking simply because it’s just old and reached the end of its lifespan. Overtime, parts age and wear out.

How To Fix It: If your water heater is leaking due to worn out parts from an old tank, then the best thing to do is to replace it.

2. Temperature and Pressure Relief Valve

If you notice water is coming down the side of your tank, then it is likely due to your temperature and pressure relief valve. Temperature that is too high in your water heater can cause increased pressure, which can cause leaks from the valve. If this isn’t the cause, then you may have a faulty valve that needs replaced.

How To Fix It: If high temperature is the culprit, turn down the temperature. If it’s a faulty valve, it will need to be replaced by a professional.

3. High Water Pressure

Increased water pressure can cause leaks through cracks or loose parts in your water heater. Usually, high water pressure is a result of high water temperature as discussed above.

How To Fix It: Turn down the temperature. However, if it is too late and cracks or loose parts have already occurred, have it looked at by a professiomnal.

4. Cracks In The Water Heater

As we mentioned briefly above, high water pressure can cause cracks in the water heater. However, there are other reasons it might crack. It could also be due to excessive sediment build-up or damaged internal components, to name a few.

How To Fix It: If you have cracks in your water heater, then you will need a replacement.

5. Faulty Drain Valve

Do you notice water leaking from the bottom of your tank? More than likely, it is due to your drain valve. A loose or broken drain valve will cause water to leak out.

How To Fix It: Try tightening the drain valve. However, if you still notice leaking, then it could be that your drain valve is broken and requires the attention of a professional.
